If you have noticed that the fat on your legs and arms does not respond to diet or exercise, and it also hurts when touched, it is natural to feel frustrated. It is vital to know that this is not a battle of discipline, but could be a chronic condition: lipoedema. This brief self-assessment test, based on clinical criteria from specialists, will help you evaluate your key symptoms and take the first step towards clarity.
Lipedema Self-Assessment Test
Find out if you might have lipedema with this simple test. It does not replace a medical diagnosis.
Do you feel heaviness or notice swelling in your legs?
Does your body not respond to diets (you lose weight in your face, torso, or chest, but barely in your legs or arms)?
Do you bruise easily (frequent bruises on your legs without a clear cause or after minor bumps)?
Do you see little change in your legs or arms even with regular physical exercise?
Do you feel pain when touched (for example, when someone leans on your legs or grabs your arm)?
Do you notice a clear DISPROPORTION between your legs or arms (much more fat volume) and your torso?
Are your hands and feet unaffected (unlike the rest of the limb, there is no fat accumulation in them)?
Is the fat on your legs or arms hard and nodular (firmer than abdominal fat)?
Do you feel spontaneous pain (pain in legs or arms even while resting)?

What Do Your Results Mean? The Diagnosis Is Clinical, Not Based on a Questionnaire
If the result of your self-assessment is positive, it is essential that you understand that an online test is only a tool for raising suspicion. An accurate diagnosis of lipedema is always clinical, comprehensive, and must be made by a medical specialist. Our team specialises in applying the most robust diagnostic protocols to differentiate your case from other pathologies.
The 3 Unmistakable Signs That Differentiate Lipedema
Lipedema is often confused with obesity or lymphedema. To ensure an accurate diagnosis at Lipedema Advanced Care, we focus on three specific medical criteria:
1. Pain and Abnormal Sensitivity to Touch
Unlike common fat (obesity), the adipose tissue in lipedema is pathological and painful. The affected areas are sensitive to touch and pressure, and deep pain is often experienced even at rest. A key test we perform is the pinch test, which triggers intense and disproportionate pain.
2. Disproportionate Accumulation and Perfect Symmetry
Fat accumulates symmetrically in both legs and/or arms, but there is a noticeable disproportion between the limbs and the trunk. A key visual sign that we look for in the physical examination is Cuff’s sign (or ‘pyjama sign’): fat accumulation stops abruptly at the ankles or wrists, leaving the feet and hands unaffected. This finding is essential to differentiate it from lymphedema, which does affect the feet.
3. Total Resistance to Diet and Exercise
This is perhaps the most frustrating sign. Lipedema fat is genetically resistant to weight loss efforts. You may lose weight in your trunk and face, but the volume of your legs does not decrease, or if it does, it is insignificant, which accentuates the disproportion.
If your test is positive: It’s time to seek an accurate diagnosis
Early diagnosis is crucial. It allows you to slow the progression of symptoms, minimise pain and prevent serious secondary complications, such as joint or lymphatic damage.
Do not delay your wellbeing due to uncertainty.
At Lipedema Advanced Care, our team of plastic and vascular surgeons, based in Valencia, specialises in differential diagnosis using a robust protocol that includes: evaluation of your medical history, detailed physical examination and, if necessary, imaging tests such as ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound.
