Lipedema is a chronic, progressive, and misunderstood disease that requires a comprehensive therapeutic approach. At Lipedema Advanced Care, we understand that there is no definitive “cure,” but there is a clear path toward a significant improvement in symptoms, volume reduction, and, fundamentally, a notable increase in the patient’s quality of life.

Our approach combines conservative treatment with precision surgical intervention, the latter being the only way to permanently remove the diseased fatty tissue.

Conservative Treatment (Pre- and Post-Surgical Phase)

Conservative treatment is essential and must be maintained lifelong. It acts as the daily support to control symptoms, pain, and inflammation. It is crucial both before surgery (to prepare the tissue) and afterward (to maintain results and general well-being).

  • Anti-inflammatory Nutritional Therapy: The goal is not weight loss (lipedema fat does not respond to conventional diets), but to reduce systemic inflammation. An anti-inflammatory diet plan, designed by Lipedema specialists, is key to alleviating pain and slowing the progression of the disease.

  • Compression Therapy: The use of flat-knit compression garments (custom-made) is vital. This support helps reduce the accumulation of interstitial fluid, minimizes the feeling of heaviness, and reduces the risk of progression to lipo-lymphedema. Prescription must be indicated by a specialist.

  • Low-Impact Therapeutic Exercise: Physical activity that does not cause trauma to the joints or the lymphatic system is recommended. Exercises such as swimming, yoga, pilates, or Nordic walking, preferably performed with adequate compression, promote natural lymphatic drainage and improve mobility.

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): Performed by a specialized physiotherapist, this manual massage technique stimulates lymphatic circulation, facilitating the evacuation of excess fluid and toxins in the affected tissue, relieving the feeling of swelling and pain.

Lipedema Surgery with Lymphatic Preservation

Specialized surgery is established as the most effective tool to permanently remove the lipedematous fatty tissue, offering a functional and aesthetic reset to the patient. At Lipedema Advanced Care, we are experts in techniques that prioritize the health and integrity of the lymphatic system, a critical aspect of this pathology.

Lipedema surgery is not conventional aesthetic liposuction. It requires a deep understanding of the disease, lymphatic anatomy, and a meticulous technique to avoid complications and maximize functional benefits.

Advanced Surgical Techniques We Apply:

  1. Water-Assisted Liposuction (WAL):

    • The global gold standard technique. Liposuction WAL it uses a controlled jet of water pressure to gently detach fat cells from the surrounding tissue.

    • Maximum Preservation: It is the most respectful method with lymphatic and blood vessels, resulting in less surgical trauma, fewer hematomas, and a faster, more comfortable postoperative recovery.

  2. Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (VASER Lipo):

    • Uses high-frequency ultrasonic energy to liquefy fat cells before extraction.

    • Precision and Contouring: It allows exceptional control over extraction, ideal for more fibrotic areas or for refining contouring, always with maximum protection of non-fat tissues.

Key Aspects of the Surgery:

  • It is not a cure, it is permanent relief: The fat that is removed will not return. However, given the chronic nature of lipedema, post-operative care and the maintenance of healthy habits are essential.

  • Phased Procedure: In most cases, due to the extent and volume of the lipedematous fat, several surgical interventions (phases) spaced over time are required to address different body areas, ensuring patient safety and optimal recovery.

  • Preparation and Recovery: A period of 6 to 12 months of conservative preparation is recommended. The postoperative period is a demanding process that requires commitment, including specialized lipedema physiotherapy (lymphatic drainage, pressotherapy) and the use of compression to obtain definitive results between 6 and 12 months after the last intervention.

Other Therapies (Medical Assessment)

  • Lipomesoplasty (Lipolytic Injections): Consists of injecting medications that seek to activate local metabolism and circulation. Its effectiveness is limited and it does not replace the surgical removal of the diseased tissue. The indication must be medically evaluated and, in general, it is considered an adjuvant therapy.

Psychological Support: A Fundamental Necessity

The impact of Lipedema goes beyond the physical. Frustration, chronic pain, late diagnosis, and social and medical incomprehension generate deep psychological distress. Regardless of the chosen treatment option (conservative or surgical), professional psychological support is highly recommended to address the emotional management of a chronic illness and improve the patient’s mental health.
