This is an in-house study by Lipedema Advanced Care, led by Dr. Alexo Carballeira.<\/p>\r\n    <p><strong>1,069 patients<\/strong> responded. Of those, 717 had a confirmed diagnosis and 352 did not. For the analysis we applied a conservative criterion, meeting at least six diagnostic criteria, which left an <strong>effective sample of 969 participants<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n    <p>This is an observational study based on self-reported answers: it describes what patients report, it does not establish cause and effect.<\/p>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n<!-- ============================= THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE DISEASE. IT IS RE ============================= -->\r\n<section class=\"tlac-section white\">\r\n  <div class=\"tlac-container\">\r\n\r\n    <div style=\"max-width:850px;\">\r\n      <div class=\"tlac-eyebrow\">Access to diagnosis<\/div>\r\n      <h2>The problem is not the disease. It is reaching the diagnosis<\/h2>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n    <p>67.1% of participants had been diagnosed and 32.9% had not. Among those diagnosed, roughly half were diagnosed by a <strong>vascular surgeon<\/strong>, 10% by a rehabilitation physician and the rest by other specialties.<\/p>\r\n    <ul class=\"tlac-list\">\r\n      <li class=\"tlac-list-item\"><strong>Half<\/strong> had to see <strong>three or more specialists<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n      <li class=\"tlac-list-item\"><strong>33.7%<\/strong> had to see <strong>more than five doctors<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n      <li class=\"tlac-list-item\">The 352 undiagnosed reported 6.5 symptoms on average, against 7.3 among the diagnosed.<\/li>\r\n    <\/ul>\r\n    <div class=\"tlac-callout\">\r\n      <p>Comparing both groups with a non-parametric test (Mann-Whitney U), the <strong>distribution of the number of symptoms was very similar<\/strong>. In other words: a large share of that 32.9% without a diagnosis very probably has lipedema too. They simply have not yet reached the specialist who will confirm it.<\/p>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n<!-- ============================= THE SYMPTOMS, BY FREQUENCY ============================= -->\r\n<section class=\"tlac-section\">\r\n  <div class=\"tlac-container\">\r\n\r\n    <div style=\"max-width:850px;\">\r\n      <div class=\"tlac-eyebrow\">What patients share<\/div>\r\n      <h2>The symptoms, by frequency<\/h2>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n    <p>In both groups, diagnosed and undiagnosed, the symptoms clustered the same way and in the same order:<\/p>\r\n    <ul class=\"tlac-list\">\r\n      <li class=\"tlac-list-item\">Heaviness or swollen-feeling legs<\/li>\r\n      <li class=\"tlac-list-item\">Leg volume does not come down with dieting<\/li>\r\n      <li class=\"tlac-list-item\">Tendency to bruise<\/li>\r\n      <li class=\"tlac-list-item\">Leg volume does not come down with exercise<\/li>\r\n      <li class=\"tlac-list-item\">Pain on palpation<\/li>\r\n      <li class=\"tlac-list-item\">Disproportion between legs or arms and the rest of the body<\/li>\r\n      <li class=\"tlac-list-item\">Hands and feet spared<\/li>\r\n      <li class=\"tlac-list-item\">Firm tissue consistency, nodularity and spontaneous pain<\/li>\r\n    <\/ul>\r\n    <p>Two clarifications, because these are the points that get oversimplified most. Diet and exercise <strong>do not on their own remove<\/strong> the disproportionate component of lipedema, and pain does not track the amount of volume accumulated; but they <strong>do reduce volume and improve symptoms<\/strong>, and where there is associated excess weight or obesity, losing weight also brings leg volume down. This is why nutrition and exercise are baseline therapy in lipedema, not an optional extra. The group with the best outcome was the one <strong>combining several at once<\/strong>, not the one choosing a single option.<\/p>\r\n    <p>Among those who had surgery, 62.8% had their calves treated, 57.8% their thighs and 16% their arms. The most used technique was <a href=\"\/en\/wal-lipedema-liposuction\/\" class=\"tlac-inline-link\">water-assisted liposuction (WAL)<\/a>, in 65.4% of cases. <strong>90.6%<\/strong> reported reduced symptoms in the treated area, markedly so in 63.9%. These are self-reported perceptions, not clinical measurements. Half were operated on only once, and only 5.6% had the same area treated again. The survey does not record follow-up time, so that figure describes what had happened by the time they answered and supports no conclusion about how durable the result is.<\/p>\r\n    <div class=\"tlac-callout\">\r\n      <p>One finding that says a lot about the state of the field: <strong>44% of the women who had surgery do not know what kind of surgeon operated on them<\/strong>.
