Being a good aesthetic surgeon does not make someone a lipedema specialist.<\/li>\r\n        <li><strong>Membership of scientific societies<\/strong>, and whether that society certifies or recertifies. The SECPRE publishes its list of recertified surgeons.<\/li>\r\n        <li><strong>Whether there are indexed publications.<\/strong> PubMed is public and free. Searching the surgeon's name there is the fastest check available, in any language.<\/li>\r\n        <li><strong>Whether the vascular study is done in-house or referred out.<\/strong> Ask directly: who does it, with which test, and at what point in the process.<\/li>\r\n        <li><strong>What follow-up is included<\/strong>, in writing, before you decide, and how it works if you live in another country.<\/li>\r\n      <\/ul>\r\n      <div class=\"emlac-callout\">\r\n        <p><strong>And one almost nobody asks:<\/strong> what happens if the diagnosis is not lipedema. A team that only operates on lipedema has an obvious incentive to find it. In our study of 969 participants, 50.4% were diagnosed by a vascular surgeon.<\/p><\/div>\r\n      <div class=\"emlac-faq-item\"><h3>Why are two specialties needed at once?<\/h3><p>Because lipedema is confused with lymphoedema, venous insufficiency or being overweight, and telling it apart requires examining the tissue and also assessing the venous system.
